Veteran, Rookie Firefighter Killed Fighting Apartment Fire at Magnolia St and Huron St, Toledo, OH


A fire in a residential building killed two Toledo, Ohio firefighters on Sunday. All of the building’s residents are believed to be OK.

Toldedo firefighters responded about 2:45 p.m. Sunday to a report of an apartment fire people inside at 548 Magnolia Street. A Mayday Alert went out about 3:09 PM Sunday for two missing firefighters. Stephen A. Machcinski, 42, and James Dickman, 31, died of injuries sustained while fighting the fire at 528 Magnolia Street.

Dickman. Our brothers lost their lives this afternoon during firefighting operations at 528 Magnolia Street. Private Machcinski was assigned to Engine 3 C Platoon and had almost 16 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Toledo. Private Dickman was assigned to Engine 3 C Platoon and had almost 6 months of dedicated service to the citizens of Toledo. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Machcinski’s and the Dickman’s families. This concludes the special annoucement. Time now is 22:22. Firefighters removed one firefighter from the back part of the apartment building while smoke was still showing about 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The firefighter, laid on a stretcher, was transported by Lucas County EMS.

Over the next two hours, firefighters continued to put water on the smoking apartment building with flames occasionally showing.
