Crash Involving 6 Semi-Trailer Trucks, 1 Other Vehicle Causes Spectacular Wreck, Injures 2

Chinchilla Hose Company of South Abington Township firefighters responded about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2016 to a crash involving a 6 semi-trailer trucks and another vehicle on 81-South in Lackawanna County . One of the semi-trailer trucks was a FedEx truck, one was a Walmart truck. One of the semi-trailers caught on fire. A Jeep was found wedged into the rear door of the FedEx semi-trailer truck.

A semi-trailer truck carrying recyclable material (bales of paper and cardboard) caught fire.

Only one lane of Interstate 81-South was opened by 11:00 am. Wednesday. Both lanes were not re-opened until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Some drivers were stuck on the interstate overnight, which prompted PennDOT officials to remind people the importance of carrying emergency kits with snacks, extra clothing, fluids for hydration, and a first-aid kit.

The area of the crash was near the Clarks Summit area, which is about 5 miles north-northwest of Scranton, Pennsylvania.
