PHOTO: Employee Injured in Bulldozer Crash at National Gypsum Co on Sea Horse Dr, Waukegan

Waukegan police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:11 AM Monday January 22, 2018 to a report of a bulldozer crash with injuries at National Gypsum Company, 515 East Seahorse Drive Waukegan, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of an employee that was run over by a bulldozer. The crash actually involved the bulldozer driver being trapped inside the rolled over bulldozer.

Fire command requested Engine 2’s crew respond to the scene for additional manpower at 6:22 AM.

Newport Township FPD’s Heavy Rescue Squad was requested at 6:24 AM. Newport’s crew was needed to help stabilize the unstable, crashed bulldozer that was on its side.

The opening to the cab was blocked when the bulldozer was rolled to its side, trapping and seriously injuring the worker inside. Firefighters used extrication tools, including the “Jaws of Life” to cut through to the cab and access the bulldozer operator.

Boatloads of rocklike mineral from shore land areas around Lake Superior are received at National Gypsum and are converted into drywall. The gypsum mounds sometimes reach up to 40 feet high, and have multiple tiers where bulldozers drive to push material into the facility. Monday morning in dark, rainy and thawing conditions, the bulldozer slipped off an edge, rolled over onto its side.

In addition to investigation of workplace accidents, OSHA regulates respiratory, skin and eye exposure to gypsum.
