3 Injured, Pipeline Burns After Tug Boat with Fuel-Loaded Barge Hits the Pipeline South of New Orleans

A gas pipeline burst into flames and injured four people after a tug boat pushing an oil barge hit the pipeline about 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013 south of New Orleans in a marshy area near Lafourche Parish and Jefferson Parish. One of the victims was reported to have suffered severe injuries. The tug boat captain suffered second- and third-degree burns on more than 75 percent of his body. He was transported to West Jefferson Hospital for stabilization before being transferred to a burn unit in Baton Rouge.

The U.S. Coast Guard and firefighters are letting the fire burn itself out.
