Dayton Video at Scene During Shooting and Immediately Following the Shooting on 5th Street Near Jackson Street

VIEWER DISCRETION: 40 to 50 shots fired (about 30 rifle shots then police exchange heard) followed by people down in the street on 5th Street near Jackson Street in Dayton Ohio.

Dayton police responded about 1:00 a.m. ET Sunday August 4, 2019 to a shooting in downtown Dayton near Ned Peppers Bar on East 5th Street near Jackson Street. Nine people were shot and killed and police on routine patrol nearby shot and killed the shooter. No police officers were injured during their brief exchange with the shooter.

Dayton Police Department Lt. Col. Matt Carper said the shooter used a long gun with multiple rounds. Mayor Nan Whaley at a press conference about 7:20 a.m. ET described the gun as a “rifle with a .223 magazine.” The crime scene was also described as a large scene.

According to Deb Decker, Montgomery County Emergency Services public information officer, the shooter in Dayton and was wearing body armor.

The Dayton Police Department opened the Convention Center nearby at 22 East 5th Street for family members and friends to reconnect following the shooting.

Miami Valley Hospital reported the hospital emergency department received 16 victims from the mass shooting. Conditions of the patients were not immediately available.
