Dashcam Video Shows York County Sheriff Deputy Shooting Man with Cane, He Mistook for a Rifle

The South Carolina deputy who shot a 70-year-old man during a traffic stop after mistaking his cane for a rifle during an after-dark traffic stop, broke down in tears as other officers arrived.

The York County sheriff’s office (South Carolina) on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 released dashboard camera video of a traffic stop from February. The dash cam video shows Bobby Canipe of Lincolnton, N.C., getting out of his truck and reaching for a cane out of his truck that was parked on the should of the highway.

Deputy Terrance Knox yells “Sir” a few times as Canipe keeps moving. When he reaches in the pickup truck bed and gets the cane, Knox yells “whoa” and starts shooting. It does not appear the Canipe started to point the cane in the direction of the deputy. Canipe, a disabled veteran, is expected to recover.

Sheriff Bruce Bryant says after watching the video he believes the officer did the right thing. Bobby Canipe was stopped for driving his truck with an expired license plate on Tuesday, February 25, 2014.

The shooting is being investigated, and is the ninth officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year. The State Law Enforcement Division says officer-involved shootings are on the rise in South Carolina, with 42 reported in 2013. In 2009, there were 27 people shot by officers.
