VIDEO: Multiple People Hit by a Truck at Chambers and West Street in Lower Manhattan, New York

EIGHT KILLED, ELEVEN INJURED
NYPD and FDNY responded about 3:20 p.m. ET Tuesday October 31, 2017 to an incident of multiple people hit by a truck with the offender’s vehicle driving on or near a bike path. The location is near West Street and Chambers near the Hudson River in lower Manhattan.

Early after the incident occurred, there was a report of two drivers fighting vehicle-to-vehicle. That phase of the incident is now believed to be the driver of a school bus intentionally driving into a rental type Home Depot flatbed pickup truck to stop the offender using the Home Depot truck to drive into bicyclists and pedestrians. A vehicle entered the bike lane from Houston Street to Chambers Street. Houston Street is almost one mile or about 10-14 blocks north of Chambers Street, along the bike path and parallel to West Street.

There is also a report that the offending driver may have entered the bike path further north of Houston Street, and then re-entered at Houston Street. There may be additional people injured north of Houston Street.

Unconfirmed witness reports say the driver of a truck got out and began shooting.

There were early breaking social media reports of fatalities at the scene. Police on scene have also confirmed fatalities, but did not report the number of injured and dead at 3:50 PM ET.

One person is in custody, and officials are reporting there is no active threat. The offender was shot twice by police, but was not killed.

West Village is located just east of the crime scene.

An early photo at the scene shows a white Home Depot rental flatbed pickup truck with heavy front-end damage.

A large crime scene spreads over several blocks.
