Raging Wildfires “Bushfires” Near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia


Firefighters are battling wildfires and trying to save homes in areas west of Sydney, Australia. (Oct. 17)

At least nine regional fires are burning near Sydney, Australia: Hall Road Fire, Ruttleys Road Fire, Mount York Road Fire, Hancocks Fire, Hungerford Creek Fire, Hank Street Fire, Linksview Road Fire, State Mine Fire and the Mt Tangory Fire.

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service responded to up to 100 fires on October 17, 2013. A fire out of control has been burning since Wednesday near Lithgow in the Blue Mountains.

Residents near the Heatherbrae fire and residents of Yanderra in the Southern Highlands were asked to evacuate.


Homes destroyed as NSW ravaged by fire.

At least eighty-one homes were destroyed and another 37 were damaged by Friday morning. A 63-year-old man, Walter Linder, had a fatal heart attack while he was fighting a fire at his home at Lake Munmorah, north of Sydney.
