Underground Vault Fire with Explosion on Central Ave Between 2nd St and 4th St, St Petersburg, Florida

St. Petersburg firefighters responded about 10:30 a.m. Sunday May 22, 2016 to a report of smoke coming from an underground vault at the intersection of 1st Avenue North and 3rd Street North in St. Petersburg. Smoke changed color and an explosion occurred about 10:45 a.m. A manhole cover was also blown off the street in the explosion. Smoke was reported but no fire was observed before or after the flash of the explosion.

No injuries were reported.
