Addison Fire Protection District firefighter/paramedics, Addison police and Illinois State Police responded about 8:20 a.m. Sunday, December 31, 2017 to a crash that involved a vehicle leaving the I-290 bridge and falling to Kingery Highway (Route 83) below the bridge. The vehicle — a Jeep Grand Cherokee — fell in the opening between the westbound and eastbound lanes of I-290 as the driver was traveling westbound on I-290. The Jeep Grand Cherokee landed with heavy damage on the southbound lanes of Route 83. Initially the SUV was headed westbound on I-290, exited the roadway and went inside the guardrail for about 300 to 400 feet, crashed through a fence, went airborne into the culvert on the northbound side Route 83, popped up airborne again, and landed down on the inside lane and inside shoulder of northbound Route 83, hit the jersey barrier, and flipped over onto southbound Route 83 where it landed severely damaged on its wheels.

The male, apparently in his 30s, was extricated in a rescue operation that lasted almost 30 minutes, was transferred to a Lifestar medevac helicopter, and was flown to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was listed in critical condition.

The driver suffered major trauma from the crash.

Southbound Route 83 Southbound and 3rd Avenue were blocked during rescue and removal of the wrecked SUV.

All lanes were reopen by 10:00 a.m.

The Elmhurst Fire Department assisted Addison at the scene, and ELk Grove Village firefighter/paramedics provided stand by coverage in an Addison Fire Station.
